Abstract: This paper introduces to the reader the region called Central Asia, a part of the world that is yet little known by most of the Western people, but that brings about great interest in governments and companies all over the world due to its economic potential and its geopolitical problems. Midway between Europe and Far East, Central Asia was taken over by Russians from 18th century on and made up the territory of Soviet Union until its collapse, in 1991. Nowadays, the countries that comprise the region (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) are independent republics that became fully integrated into the globalized capitalism. Free from Moscow's dictates, they could establish contacts with other big countries. The purpose of this paper is to compare the presence of the two most powerful in the neighborhood, Russia itself and China. Having introduced the history and the special features of Central Asia, this monograph depicts how these two mentioned countries intervened mainly in the political, economic and institutional of the region in recent times. Through the analysis of the intentions and the ways in which the interventions are made, the paper aims to understand if the trend of China taking over from Russia the hegemonic power over Central Asia is true and deserves further attention in the future
