Resumo: A presente dissertação analisa a trajetória de transformações da estrutura agrária desencadeada pela revolução cubana em 1959, até a emblemática safra açucareira de 1970, quando toda sociedade se lançou no esforço de produção de 10 milhões de toneladas métricas de açúcar. Sustentamos que a revolução cubana promoveu um combate histórico contra o subdesenvolvimento, e as condições de sua reprodução: a plantation modernizada, a segregação social e a dependência externa. Em contraponto a essas condições, o igualitarismo e a soberania nacional foram erigidos como finalidades da revolução, articuladas ao projeto socialista de desenvolvimento. As reformas agrárias de 17 de maio de 1959 e de 10 de outubro de 1963 constituíram os motores das transformações revolucionárias. A estrutura agrária foi modificada essencialmente em três dimensões: o regime de propriedades, o regime de cultivos e o regime de trabalho. Nestas dimensões, os debates sobre a transição ao socialismo se entrelaçaram às polêmicas sobre as vias de superação do subdesenvolvimento. Reconstituímos as controvérsias sobre as novas formas econômicas da estrutura agrária e seus sujeitos sociais; analisamos as tensões entre a diversificação e a monocultura canavieira; discutimos as escolhas a respeito da estratégia de desenvolvimento baseada na agricultura; explicamos os condicionantes da permanência da especialização açucareira e suas relações com a nova inserção internacional de Cuba no bloco soviético. Ao final, buscamos expor as conquistas e os limites do projeto cubano de superação do subdesenvolvimento, que percorreu os estreitos caminhos históricos do possível

Abstract: This dissertation analyses the trajectory of the agrarian structure transformations triggered by the Cuban revolution in 1959, up to the iconic 1970 sugar harvest, when the whole society undertook the effort to produce 10 million metric tons of sugar. We hold that the Cuban revolution promoted a historic fight against underdevelopment and the conditions of its reproduction: the modernized plantation, the social segregation and the external dependence. In contrast to these conditions, egalitarianism and national sovereignty were erected as aims of the revolution, linked to the socialist development project. The agrarian reforms of May 17, 1959 and October 10, 1963 were the engines of revolutionary transformations. The agrarian structure was modified regarding three main dimensions: the landownership regime, the crops regime and the labor regime. In these dimensions, the debates about the transition to socialism intertwined with the polemics on the means of overcoming underdevelopment. We reconstitute the controversies over the new economic forms of agrarian structure; analyze the tensions between diversification and sugarcane monoculture; discuss the choices regarding the development strategy based on agriculture; explain the conditions of the sugar specialization permanence and its relations with the new international insertion of Cuba in the Soviet bloc. At the end, we seek to clarify the achievements and limits of the Cuban project for overcoming underdevelopment, which toured the narrow historical paths of possible
