Hipoteticamente,

Abstract: It is not surprising that cotton has been one of the first crops to be genetically modified by the
industry, due to itschemical dependency. Cotton was one of the genetically modifiedcrops
most rapidly adopted since the beginning of its commercialization in 1996. Hypothetically,
the main reason for adoption of genetically modified cotton would be the promise of
increasing productivity and reducing spraying of insecticide, as an alternative more
environmentally safe and economically viable to grow conventional cotton. The main
objective of this survey is to compare the costs of production of transgenic cotton and
traditional cotton, ie, identify and analyze the major economic impacts arising from the use of
transgenic seeds in cotton by farmers, through possible reduction the cost of production and
distribution of economic surplus. Regarding the comparative costs of production between
transgenic and conventional cotton, this paper analyzes whether the arguments that claim the
lowest cost with the introduction of transgenic cotton are or not correct. Uponthe distribution
of economic surplus this paper will verify the concern expressed by critics of biotechnology
claim that the developers of GM products (private companies) are or not the main
beneficiaries of the use of transgenic crops.
