Resumo: O efeito de Maytenus llicirolia Mart ex. Reiss ("espinheira-santa") e AchiDea milleColium L. ("milfolhas") sobre a espennatogênese de camundongos albinos "Swiss" foi estudado a nfvel morfológico (microscopia de luz e eletrônica). Essas espécies são plantas medicinais, de uso popular e são utilizadas como reguladoras da fertilidade. Extratos alcoólicos de folhas de M.llicifolia fonun administrados em doses diárias de 200 mgtkg, por 20 dias, por via intraperitoneal e em doses de 800 mgtkgldia. por 30 dias, por via oral. Extrato alcoólico de flores de A.millelolium foi administrado em doses diárias de 200 mgIkg, por 20 dias, por via intraperitoneal , e extrato hidroalcoólico, em doses de 300 mgtkgldia, por 30 dias, por via oral. As alterações observadas nos testículos dos animais tratados com M.ilicifolia e com A.millefolium foram: esfoliação de células genninativas imaturas, necrose de células genninativas (constatada através de núcleos picnóticos e hipertróficos) e vacuolização de túbulos seminíferos. Essas alterações variavam em intensidade nos diferentes experimentos. Em alguns controles, também foram encontrados núcleos picnóticos e alguns túbulos vacuolizados ou com somente células de Sertoli. A nível estrutural. os testículos de animais tratados com 200 mg'kgIdia e 800 mgIkgI dia de M.llicifolia não diferiram dos controles. Entretanto, a nível ultra-estrutural for3Ill observados gotfculas lipidicas de grande tamanho nas células de Sertoli e acrossomos defonnados e dilatados nas espennátides jovens dos animais tratados com a maior dose. A maioria dos túbulos seminfferos dos animais tratados por M.i1icifolia apresentava espennatogênese nonnal, resultando na produção de espermatozóides, indicando que o seu extrato alcoólico não continha substâncias, qualitativa ou quantitativamente, capazes de inteITomper o processo espermatogênico. Os túbulos seminfferos dos animais tratados com 200 mgtkg!dia de A.millefolium, por via intraperitoneal, por 20 dias, foram os mais prejudicados. Muitos apresentavam descamação de células genninativas imaturas, que preenchiam a sua luz.. e tinham epitélio germinativo reduzido. Naqueles de animais tratados com 300 mwkg/dia do extrato (por via oral). fonun encontradas muitas células em metáfase. que podem ser decoITentes de um bloqueio no ciclo celular ou de um estimulo à proliferação celular, provocados por substâncias nela presentes. O fato dos testiculos dos animais tratados por via intraperitoneal terem sido mais afetados sugere que as substâncias responsáveis por essas ações ou estio em baixa concentração no extrato hidroalcoólico ou são degradadas dm1mte a absorção oral

A daily dose of 200 mg/kg of the alcoholic _.xtract of MJ1ldfoJia leaves Wasl administered intraperitonealty, for 20 days, and a daily dose of 800 rnglkg. orally, for 30 days. The alcohotic extract of A..miHefoUum flowers was daily administered aí doses of 200mglkg, intraperitoneally, for 20 daya and 30Omgrkg ofthe hydroalcoholic extract, orally, for 30 days. The alterntions observed in testes treated with M.illcifolia and A.miBefolium included immature genn ceUs, germ cell necrosis (recognised as picnotic and hypertrophic nuelei) and vacuolized seminipherous tubules.
