Up and Go test (TUGT).

The human balance is a complex motor task and its maintenance is essential to the accomplishment of daily tasks. The aging process and chronical diseases that afflict elderly people cause serious balance disorders, making them more sensitive to falls. Main objective: Evaluate and compare the functional balance of elderly people of the community without history of falls, with one fall and recurrent falls. Methodology: A study of a transversal cut was done, in which the sample was composed of 96 individuals, aged 65 or more, living in the community and divided equally into three groups, according to the history of falls related the year before. For the functional evaluation of balance, 2 instruments were used: the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Timed up and Go test (TUGT). Results: Elderly people with the history of one fall and recurrent falls used the TUGT for a longer time than the elderly people that had no history of falls, and the difference was significant (p=0,002). During the BBS evaluation, elderly people that presented recurrent falls punctuated significantly less than those without falls (p=0,013). A strong association was found between BBS and TUGT among the 3 groups (p=0,000). There were also associations between BBS and the variables: civil status, age and functional capacity in the 3 groups evaluated. Conclusion: Elderly people with history of falls, especially recurrent falls, had difficulty in the functional balance evaluation, showing the influence of the balance deficit in the increase of the risk of falls in elderly people Ver menos
