Resumo: O objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar os processos de escolhas lingüísticas por estudantes de letras no contexto da globalização, em que o idioma internacional estabelecido é o inglês. Através do estudo das dinâmicas que determinam a evolução e o desaparecimento dos vernáculos, bem como daquelas que atuam sobre as línguas veiculares através da história, procedemos à análise de questionários e entrevistas para entender a relação dialética das escolhas destes sujeitos e seu contexto histórico. Este estudo visa estabelecer os antecedentes, sejam eles culturais, epistemológicos ou sócio-políticos, que tanto conformam os usos sociais das línguas modernas quanto moldam as políticas de línguas e seus reflexos nos processos de escolhas lingüísticas, revelando aspectos de condicionamento, delimitações e elencando questões atuais dos entraves entre língua, hegemonia e poder. Abstract: This research aims at investigating the processes of linguistic choice by undergraduates at Literature and Language Teaching courses within the context of globalization, in which the established international language is English. Through the study of those dynamics that determine the evolution and vanishing of vernacular languages, as well as those that influence the vehicular ones throughout History, questionnaires and interviews have been analyzed in order to bring about some understanding regarding the dialectical relationship between the subjects' choices and their historical context. This study is focused on the antecedents, whatever cultural, epistemological or sociopolitical they might be, that mold both the social usage of modern languages and the language politics and their implications on the processes of linguistic choice, thus revealing aspects of conditioning and delimitation as well presenting important current issues of language, hegemony and power.
