Resumo: O artigo pretende estudar as tensas e ambíguas relações que a obra de Gilberto Freyre estabelece com o signo "América". Por um lado, procuramos investigar como as percepções iniciais que o autor de Casa-Grande & Senzala cria das culturas brasileira e norte-americana ajudaram a estruturar sua consagrada interpretação do Brasil. Por outro lado, examinamos o modo como Freyre posiciona o Brasil num antigo e duradouro debate sobre o sentido dos dois projetos civilizatórios existentes nas Américas – a Anglo e a Latina Ver menos

Abstract: This article seeks to study the tense and ambivalent relationships established by Gilberto Freyre's work with the sign "America". On the one hand, we attempt to investigate how the initial perceptions created by the author of The Masters and the Slaves of the Brazilian and North American cultures helped structure his famous interpretation of Brazil. On the other hand, we examine the way Freyre places Brazil in a lasting and old debate on the meaning of the two main civilizing projects existing in the Americas - the Anglo and Latin Americas Ver menos
