Resumo: Em São Tomé e Príncipe (STP), o português, além de oficial, é a língua materna e majoritária da população. A difusão do português, no país, culminou na emergência de variedades autóctones, dentre elas, o português de São Tomé e Príncipe (PSTP). Com base na Constituição da República Democrática de São Tomé e Príncipe, nos dados do censo, em duas entrevistas sociolinguísticas realizadas em trabalho de campo no ano de 2019 e na literatura, discutimos a difusão da língua portuguesa em STP à luz dos conceitos de norma de Cintra (1985). Ademais, trazemos, a partir de fatos socio-históricos, uma reflexão crítica acerca da ascensão do português no arquipélago, discutindo questões ideológicas e subjetivas que transpassam o português enquanto língua pluricêntrica, moldam a percepção e a atitude do falante e atingem o ensino de língua portuguesa local. Abstract: In São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), Portuguese is not only the official language but also the mother tongue and majority language of the population. The spread of Portuguese in the country has led to the emergence of indigenous varieties, including São Tomé and Príncipe Portuguese (PSTP). Based on the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, census data, two sociolinguistic interviews conducted during fieldwork in 2019, and the literature, we discuss the spread of the Portuguese language in STP in light of Cintra's (1985) concept of norm. Furthermore, drawing on socio-historical facts, we provide a critical reflection on the rise of Portuguese in the archipelago, discussing ideological and subjective issues that influence Portuguese as a pluricentric language, shape speaker perception and attitude, and affect local Portuguese language teaching.
