Resumo: Esta tese tem por objeto a literatura de transição entre o fantástico e a ficção científica, a chamada protoficção científica, produzida no Rio de Janeiro, nas três primeiras décadas do século XX. Busca demonstrar que os autores recortados – Gastão Cruls, Berilo Neves e Coelho Netto – fizeram da ciência um instrumento do fantástico. Assim, a pesquisa rastreou debates e tensões sociais imbricados nesta literatura, enfatizando os dilemas relacionados à sexualidade, ao gênero e à espécie, que acompanharam a popularização das teses da nascente endocrinologia sexual, no período em tela. Buscou a trajetória de ideias que, vindas do discurso científico, popularizaram a ciência dos hormônios, por meio da literatura, que dialogava com uma intervenção normativa sobre o corpo e o sexo, inédita até então: a manipulação hormonal em corpos humanos e animais, propondo teorias que reformulavam a compreensão da fisiologia e da sexualidade. Abstract: This thesis takes up literature which performs a transition between the fantastic and science fiction, known as proto-science fiction, produced in Rio de Janeiro during the first three decades of the 20th century. It seeks to demonstrate that the selected authors – Gastão Cruls, Berilo Neves, and Coelho Netto – made science an instrument of the fantastic. Thus, the research traces debates and social tensions embedded in this literature, emphasizing dilemmas related to sexuality, gender, and species, which accompanied the popularization of the emerging theories of sexual endocrinology during the period in question. It investigates the trajectory of ideas that, coming from scientific discourse, popularized the science of hormones through literature, which engaged with a novel normative intervention on the body and sex: hormonal manipulation in human and animal bodies, proposing theories that reshaped the understanding of physiology and sexuality. By destabilizing the concept of the human through depictions of the monstrous, the animal, and the machine, and by disturbing traditional notions of gender, sexuality, and fertility, proto-science fiction provides a strategic space to understand the tensions between social struggles, literature, and science in Brazilian modernization Ver menos
