Resumo: Este trabalho está inserido no campo da História Cultural e da Educação, focando especificamente na demanda popular por escolas em Campinas durante o final do século XIX e início do XX. O estudo tem como principal objetivo compreender as necessidades, pressões e exigências da população campineira em relação à educação, além de explorar as motivações e contradições que moldaram o processo educativo. Utilizando a abordagem de análise de Michel Certeau (2007), este trabalho não apenas revisita o tema da demanda popular por escolas, mas também reavalia o papel desempenhado pelo poder municipal de Campinas na expansão educacional entre 1893 e 1920. A pesquisa se baseia em um referencial teórico atenta para importância da demanda popular, incluindo estudos de Demartini (1989), Souza (1998) e Hilsdorf (2003). A análise concentra-se em documentos que evidenciam a promoção da educação pelo poder público do estado de São Paulo e do município de Campinas. Esses documentos, principalmente correspondências enviadas ao Intendente/Prefeito Municipal e outros registros coletados no Arquivo Municipal de Campinas, fornecem uma visão das práticas docentes, condições de trabalho, estrutura das escolas, solicitações de matrícula gratuita em escolas particulares e a ação da população em relação às autoridades locais. Além disso, o estudo examina a resposta dos professores e da comunidade em geral a essas demandas, revelando as estratégias de suas iniciativas. Abstract: This work falls within the field of Cultural History and Education, specifically focusing on the popular demand for schools in Campinas during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The main objective of the study is to understand the needs, pressures, and demands of the Campinas population regarding education, as well as to explore the motivations and contradictions that shaped the educational process. Using Michel Certeau’s analytical approach (2007), this work not only revisits the theme of popular demand for schools but also reevaluates the role played by the municipal government of Campinas in educational expansion between 1893 and 1920. The research is based on a theoretical framework that emphasizes the importance of popular demand, including studies by Demartini (1989), Souza (1998), and Hilsdorf (2003). The analysis focuses on documents that highlight the promotion of education by the public authorities of the state of São Paulo and the municipality of Campinas. These documents, mainly correspondence sent to the Intendant/Mayor and other records collected in the Campinas Municipal Archive, provide insight into teaching practices, working conditions, school structures, requests for free enrollment in private schools, and the actions of the population in relation to local authorities. Additionally, the study examines the response of teachers and the community at large to these demands, revealing the strategies behind their initiatives.
