Resumo: Entre 1919 e 1922, inauguraram-se as obras de reformulação do antigo Largo da Memória, no centro da cidade de São Paulo, e da construção dos monumentos comemorativos do centenário da independência brasileira, localizados ao longo da antiga estrada que ligava o litoral paulista à cidade de São Paulo. Tais monumentos, revestidos por azulejos decorativos, marcam uma nova fase da história da azulejaria brasileira a medida que introduzem novas interpretações espaciais e simbólicas em suas arquiteturas, seja por meio das características materiais de seus azulejos e seu valor imagético, ou ainda através de seu relacionamento com o local de fabricação e origem. O presente trabalho investiga a formação das artes decorativas aplicadas, seu uso no âmbito industrial e na composição de uma linguagem artística na arquitetura paulista do início do século XX. Partimos da análise da pioneira Fábrica de Louças Santa Catharina, inaugurada em São Paulo em 1913, onde foram confeccionados esses azulejos, e da importante rede de profissionais e artistas da época, para, por fim, relacioná-los com o contexto de grande transformação urbana, com as mudanças vinculadas às novas noções de higiene e com o surgimento de novos valores estéticos que passariam a ser defendidos no início daquele século em São Paulo Ver menos

Abstract: Between 1919 and 1922, the works to redesign the old "Largo da Memória" square in downtown São Paulo were inaugurated, as well as the construction of commemorative monuments for the centennial of Brazilian independence, located along the old road that connected the São Paulo coast to the city. These monuments, adorned with decorative tiles, mark a new phase in the history of Brazilian tilework as they introduce new spatial and symbolic interpretations in their architectures, whether through the material characteristics of their tiles and their imagery value, or through their relationship with the place of manufacture and origin. This work investigates the formation of applied decorative arts, their use in the industrial sphere, and in the composition of an artistic language in São Paulo's architecture at the beginning of the 20th century. We start with the analysis of the pioneering Santa Catharina White China Factory, inaugurated in São Paulo in 1913, where these tiles were made, and the important network of professionals and artists of the time, to finally, relate them to the context of great urban transformation, with changes linked to new notions of hygiene and the emergence of new aesthetic values that would be promoted in São Paulo at the beginning of that century Ver menos
