Resumo: A Controvérsia Eucarística ocorrida no século XI deu-se em torno dos questionamentos de Berengário de Tours sobre o pão e o vinho consagrados no altar. Para o arcediago, a transformação deles em corpo e sangue de Jesus Cristo esbarrava na impossibilidade de passarem por uma mudança carnal, material. Baseando-se em textos patrísticos e tratados do Império Carolíngio, concluiu que a transformação se daria de maneira intelectual, o que lhe rendeu diversas condenações ao longo de trinta anos. Este trabalho pretende defender que as causas da querela ultrapassam as questões de ordem teológica. Propomos investigar a relação entre a querela eucarística e os conflitos políticos protagonizados pelo papado no período, em particular, as disputas por sés episcopais e as transformações nos meios religioso e político daí advindas. Assim, analisaremos as posturas pontifícias frente aos principais atores da controvérsia, comparando-as com ações em outros conflitos do período, como contra o nicolaísmo e a simonia, de modo a buscar semelhanças e diferenças que possam elucidar o papel desempenhado pelos personagens a partir de sua posição em uma rede complexa, desigual e volúvel de autoridade. Para tanto, tomaremos por base escritos de Berengário e de seus opositores ? sobretudo Lanfranco de Cantuária, Guitmundo de Aversa e Alberico de Monte Cassino ?, cartas dos envolvidos e documentos conciliares, textos produzidos principalmente em territórios angevinos e normandos, mas que, assim como seus autores, circularam também por cidades germânicas e italianas Ver menos

Abstract: The Eucharistic Controversy that took place in the 11th century occurred around the questioning of Berengar of Tours about the bread and wine consecrated on the altar. For the archdeacon, their transformation into the body and blood of Jesus Christ came up against the impossibility of undergoing a carnal, material change. Based on patristic texts and treatises from the Carolingian Empire, he concluded that the transformation would take place in an intellectual way, which earned him several condemnations over the course of thirty years. This work intends to defend that the causes of the dispute go beyond the theological questions. We propose to investigate the relationship between the Eucharistic Controversy and the political conflicts led by the papacy in the period the disputes for episcopal Sees and the changes in the religious and political environment that resulted from it. Thus, we will analyze the pontifical attitudes towards the main actors of the controversy, comparing them with actions in other conflicts of the period, such as against Nicolaism and simony, in order to seek similarities and differences that may elucidate the roles played by the characters based on their position in a complex, unequal, and volatile network of authority. Thereby, we will take as a basis the writings of Berengar and his opponents - mainly Lanfranc of Canterbury, Guitmund of Aversa and Alberic of Monte Cassino -, letters from those involved and conciliar documents, texts produced mainly in Angevin and Norman territories, but which, like their authors, also circulated in Germanic and Italian cities Ver menos
