Resumo: Elegia foi um gênero poético da Antiguidade bastante específico quanto à sua forma, o dístico elegíaco, porém de conteúdo muito variável. Pelos poemas que chegaram até nós, é possível classificar a elegia antiga em filosófica, política, bélica, simpótica. Desta última deriva, em parte, a elegia erótica romana, que representa o ápice do gênero na história da literatura. Ao mesmo tempo, é da Antiguidade que vem a ideia segundo a qual o gênero elegíaco estaria ligado, em seus primórdios, ao canto de lamento. Esta é a face que mais marcou a ideia de elegia, sobretudo a partir das elegias compostas pelos latinos e, mais tarde, em vernacular. No entanto, o lamento ganha novos contornos, como parece ser o caso dos poemas contidos em Elegia para a partida, de Zbigniew Herbert, obra publicada em 1990. Nosso objetivo, aqui, é propor uma análise que busque verificar em que medida Herbert, voraz leitor da Antiguidade clássica, se aproxima das origens da elegia, assim como em quais pontos diverge dela, abrindo outras possibilidades a este gênero tão prolífico

Abstract: Elegy was a poetic genre of Antiquity quite specific regarding its form, the elegiac couplet, but with very variable content. From the poems that came to us, it is possible to classify ancient elegy as philosophical, political, martial, symposiac. From the latter derives, partly, Roman erotic elegy, which represents the apex of the genre in the history of literature. At the same time, it is from Antiquity that comes the idea that the elegiac genre would be linked, in its beginnings, to moan song. This is the aspect that most marked the idea of elegy, mainly from the elegies composed by the Romans, and latter in vernacular. However, moan takes on new contours, as seems to be the case with the poems contained in Elegy for the departure, by Zbigniew Herbert, published in 1990. Our purpose here is to offer an analysis that seeks to verify to what extent Herbert, voracious reader of classical Antiquity, get closer to the origins of the elegy, as well as at which points he diverges from it, opening up other possibilities for this so prolific genre
