Resumo: O presente artigo busca discutir, a partir das formulações de Lynn Hunt, em sua obra A invenção dos Direitos Humanos: uma história (2009), como as obras de arte, em geral, e a literatura, em específico, foram fundamentais no desenvolvimento e na assimilação do conceito de igualdade ao longo dos séculos XVIII e XIX, compreendendo-o aqui enquanto elemento essencial para a efetivação e difusão dos Direitos Humanos no ocidente. Para tanto, a partir das produções de autores como Jean Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Aton Tchekhov, entre outros, analisaremos o contexto histórico-literário supracitado, marcado por importantes revoluções burguesas, ocorridas nos Estados Unidos (1776) e na França (1789), a fim de se compreender os impactos das letras na disseminaçãoe assimilaçãoda empatia e, por conseguinte, nas mudanças sócio-políticas da modernidade.

Abstract: This article seeks to discuss, based on the formulations of Lynn Hunt, in her work The invention of Human Rights: a story (2009), how works of art, in general, and literature, in specific, were fundamental in the development and in the assimilation of the concept of equality throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, understanding it here as an essential element for the implementation and dissemination of Human Rights in the West. To this end, based on the productions of authors such as Jean Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Aton Tchekhov, among others, we will analyze the aforementioned historical-literary context, marked by important bourgeois revolutions, which occurred in the United States (1776) and France (1789), in order to understand the impacts of letters on the dissemination and assimilation of empathy and, therefore, on the socio-political changes of modernity
