Resumo: É comum dizer que os cursos de Cálculo são por demais teóricos e, desse modo, geram insatisfação em seus estudantes. O objetivo deste artigo é indicar que, dentre os vários motivos que acarretam essas dificuldades e desagrado, aqueles voltados ao não entendimento da aritmetização da matemática, frase de Felix Klein no século XIX, são os mais relevantes. Tal alegação fundamenta-se na percepção das dificuldades erigidas no decorrer do árduo processo histórico que culminou com o rigor na matemática. Entende-se que dificuldades semelhantes podem ocorrer com estudantes que ascendem à Universidade sem um preparo adequado ao manuseio dessa nova aritmética. Neste artigo exibem-se exemplos divisores de águas entre a aritmética do colégio e a aritmética presente em cursos de Cálculo. Estima-se que o estudante, ao ser-lhe esclarecido que o curso de Cálculo está alicerçado nessa nova aritmética, possa dirimir esforços do pensamento voltado à aritmética do colégio para lançá-lo na compreensão do processo de aritmetização da matemática. Caso contrário, ele pode entender que, no curso de Cálculo, a aritmética do colégio, além de necessária, seja também suficiente

Abstract: It is common to say that Calculus courses are too theoretical and thus they cause dissatisfaction in their students. The aim of this article is to indicate that, among the various reasons that cause these difficulties and displeasure, those related to misunderstanding the arithmetizing of mathematics, phrase coined by Felix Klein in the XIX century, are the most relevant. This claim is based on the perception of the difficulties erected in the course of the arduous historical process that culminated with rigor in mathematics. We think that similar difficulties may occur with students ascending to the University without adequate preparation for handling this new arithmetic. In this article we show examples that can be seen as water divisors between High School arithmetic and the arithmetic present in Calculus courses. We estimate that, when it is clarified to the student that the course of Calculus is based on this new arithmetic, he can so settle efforts of thought focused on the mathematics of High School to launch it in understanding the process of the arithmetizing of mathematics. Otherwise he may understand that, in the course of Calculus, the High School arithmetic is not only necessary, it is also sufficient
