The objectives of this research were a fist approach for the development of a simple route for the synthesis of smoke suppressants based on the deposition of copper (II)‐zinc‐molybdenum compounds over calcium carbonate. It also aimed the investigation of their effects onto the dehydrochlorination behavior (thermogravimetry) and heat release and smoke development (cone calorimetry), when incorporated into a reference poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composition. The results show that a simple synthesis route, based on the reaction of copper (II) and zinc molybdates precursors in an aqueous media over calcium carbonate, can lead to the formation of candidate smoke suppressant compounds, despite the fact that it was not possible to identify the expected molybdates through X‐ray diffractometry. When adding these compounds to a plasticized reference PVC composition, both heat and smoke peaks during the combustion process are reduced, with minor changes in the heat stability of the composition
