The aim of this article is to analyse the nursing teams working conditions and health complaints, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), in a public hospital in Sao Paulo State. A cross-sectional study was developed and 193 professionals from the nursing staff participate. The survey questionnaires about sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, health and work conditions were applied. The most frequent diseases were respiratory diseases, hypertension and obesity. The work conditions of nurses of the Intensive Care Units is described, and the factors that can cause overload and lead to accidents and occupational diseases. Among the issues cited by the professionals there are the long and excessive working hours, exacerbated by shifts, undersized teams, the need for better material resources and the concern with biological agents that may affect both, patients and professionals themselves. Preventive and health promotion activities at work are essential for professionals in nursing area
