Resumo: Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar procedimentos na Resolução de Problemas Verbais Aritméticos, em crianças das séries iniciais do 10 Grau da Escola Pública. Pela perspectiva construtivista, com base na Teoria de Piaget, procurou-se analisar questões pertinentes à construção de uma correta representação mental e à Resolução de Problemas verbais de estrutura multiplicativa levando-se em consideração o papel das abstrações e a utilização de material concreto de apoio.Constatou-se que, na solução de problemas, ainda que não seja por meio de uma estratégia mais elaborada como aquela exigida pela escola, é fundamental o papel das representações internas do sujeito nos processos cognitivos. Os dados mostraram que as crianças constroem uma representação interna do problema, conseguem selecionar e utilizar estratégias, informais e diferenciadas (contagem, aditiva e multiplicativa), explicitando algumas vezes de maneira mais correta, outras vezes menos correta, os cálculos que realiza para a resolução de problemas aritméticos. O uso de material concreto revelou-se como uma possibilidade de grande interesse para a intervenção do professor no auxílio aos alunos, tendo em vista a solução de problemas
