Abstract: Infectious diseases are one of the most common reasons for consulting the doctor. Of these, 70% correspond to respiratory tract infections, especially pharyngotonsillitis. Viral infections are the most frequent. Among bacterial infections, group A beta hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes is the most prevalent agent and it deserves special attention because of the risk of complications. The gold standard for etiologic diagnosis of this pathology is the nasopharyngeal culture. The first time treatment is penicillin. The aim of this paper is to review the most common types of pharyngotonsillitis, difficulty in establishing the differential and etiological diagnosis of this disease and its treatment. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora.
