Abstract: As part of a extensive multicentric international project, responsible for mercury dosimetry in blood, urine and hair of 625 persons living near gold prospections in South Pará State, Brazil, in this communication evidences of genotoxicity in Kayapó (Gorotire e Djudjetiktire) Indians and prospectors are reported. Micronuclei of exfoliate cells from oral mucous have been percentually counted, as weel as chromosomic aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocites kept in culture. Dosimetries were processed by Cold Vapor, Atomic Absorption Spectrometry CV-AAS techniques. Quantitative procedures were applied: on discriptive levels, central tendencies, dispersion and position measures; on analytical grounds, Mann-Whitney's test and Sperman's coefficient. Micronuclei resulted more frequent in Indians and numerical chromosomic aberrations in prospectors. Such data are considered by discussing either biological and social facts. Among the first ones, there are previous cytogenetical informations on these primitive populations. In a broader sense reports on evolution and consequences of exposing human groups to such conditions are reviewed.
